Tom’s Story

Thomas Barba, founder and owner-operator of Auburn PT, graduated from the University of Michigan with an undergraduate degree in Health Studies in 1994 and a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Michigan – Flint in 1996.

After graduation, Tom worked for Bay Medical Center until 1999 in both acute care and the Center for Rehabilitation outpatient PT center.  In 1999, Tom performed contract work in several outpatient Physical Therapy clinics around the State of Michigan trying to gather as much information on the right and wrong ways to run a physical therapy clinic, with the ultimate goal of opening up his very own clinic.
While driving to Bay Medical Center in Bay City, MI from Sanford, MI for 3 years, Tom consistently drove through the city of Auburn and fell in love with the people as he stopped at Pat and Jerry’s Restaurant for dinner, and shopped at the local grocery store.  Realizing there was no Physical Therapy clinic in Auburn, Tom thought this would be a great place to realize his dream.
After several months of looking for the perfect location, one was found!

And the story of Auburn PT begins… Auburn PT was founded on the principles that quality care, customer service, and the highest patient respect would be established and instilled in all current and future employees.

1st Clinic Opens in Auburn

In December, 2002, Tom made a goal to open up a clinic in Auburn the following year. A new building was being constructed on the corner of 9-mile and Midland Road. A lease was signed before the building was complete and was ready in May, 2003. The first Auburn PT location was ~500 sq. ft. and the first patient was seen at 7:00 a.m. on June 3, 2003.
